Filming Schedule

As you know from our feedback blog posts we need to film more shots which have already been listed, here is our timetable:

Monday - from 2.45pm we will be filming a sunset shot so we can clearly show the change from daylight to night time and also be filming close ups.

and then Tuesday 5pm we will be filming more bike shots at night time

To do list

After our rough cut feed back we noticed that we need to some emergency re-shooting.On Monday we will shoot a base track of Cristian in a alley way and have some shots on the sunset so we can introduce day to night. - Created with Haiku Deck, presentation software that inspires

Rough Cut

  • We need more close up of Cristian as he doesn't come across as the main artist.
  • We need to allow for Cristian to finish his words, instead of cutting away before he finishes.
  • Try to cut on the beat.
  • Show the development into the night shots; we could shoot some sunset shots to do this.
  • We need jump shots when we are performing to follow Vernallis theory.
  • Some of our shots are too long we need to make them shorter to follow the fast pace of the rap genre.

Feedback

This is a video of the feedback we have received from our class members and teacher. We will reflect on these points and improve them in the lessons to come..

we will also be filming on monday and tuesday to film more close ups etc

Today's Lesson Update

In this lesson we will be aiming to finish our first rough cut of our music video, once we are done we will show our class to get some feedback on how to improve it. I will be recording the feedback for our blog.

Production Of Music Video: Photos taken

Untitled Haiku Deck - Created with Haiku Deck, presentation software that inspires

Whilst shooting for the music video I decided to take some time to experiment with my camera. I asked Korrie to pose for the picture that could potentially be part of the DigiPak, However since Korrie aka Kace isn't the original artist on the song this means that it will be very unlikely for him to be on the album.
I still made a slide show showing how I set up a reflection from the lamp we were using to film to create a sound wave image on a wall. I think this image works well with our genere as the sound waves replicate the voice sound waves. I experimented with colour and I am considering the idea of this image to be on the album cover. The sound waves can also work as a Synergy for the artist Nathan Grey

Production Of Music Video: Editing so far

In this session of editing I started to set down the Base Tracks to our music video. I created 'bins'(folders)  and placed the videos in order of location, this made selecting videos a lot easier. I placed a video of Korrie rapping and desaturated it to experiment with how it looked. This was a successful edit and gave a nice effect to the video. We will import this to more of the video =

Reflection On Progress

Good Point
  • Always detailed and very well presented.
  • Excellent evidence of research into similar products
  • B+ could achieve an A by doing:
Improvement Points:
  • Reflect on my improving skills
  • Show how I'm going to act upon the feedback given by the group
  • Add more ways of presenting ideas

Reflection of Progress

After looking at my teachers feedback,  I have decided that I would act on this:

  • I will reduce my use of 'Haiku Deck'
  • Look more into other forms of ICT
  •  Fix anamatic
  • Blog about Pitch feedback changes

Production Of Music Video: How is it going?

So far filming has been going at a good pace. Every filming session is fun to do and we get work done. There is a nice feeling of team work when it comes to filming as everyone does there part or finds a way to help. Although most of our filming sessions have been at night it doesn't feel too much effort to do because I am enjoying the process of creating the music video. I can see that my skills are improving with every session of filming. Before I wouldn't focus on the framing of the shot. However now I make sure it looks good before shooting.

There is a lot more preparation when we are planning a shoot because we know its important not to waste time when there. The group is getting along fine and we even set up a Whatsapp group chat just to make sure everyone has a way to communicate with each other.
Soon we will start editing and I put myself forward for head editor. I think we have some nice shots although when it does come to edit I think we might stumble because some of the shots we are looking to use are way too short. I believe that in the future we might have to go out again to re-film some shots and have the full song played.

Filming - Vlog

Here is a short vlog which was made while we were filming in the cemetery.

Plan for Monday and Tuesday

Luckily, on Monday and Tuesday we have no college. Although to make use of this spare time we will carry on filming. The plan on Monday will be filming in the Graveyard again to get some more shots and also to redo some of the ones we have already done. On Tuesday we will be going to 'The Lift' to shoot the rapping scene as we needed an inside space to use our flickering lights.

Editing - Framing Shots

In todays lesson we have been reviewing all of our filming clips. In one stage of this, we noticed a slight fault in our framing. Here are the examples below:

In this shot we thought that the framing was bad as the camera should of been closer to us and also our heads should of been at the top of the shot. Another thing is that the camera was slightly too high.

In contrast, this was a better framed shot. We had the camera at a slightly lower angle and was much closer so it looked as the rapper was looking down into the camera.

Production of Music Video: Framing Our Shots

In this post I want to talk about my framing of shots and how I decided to improve them.

This is an example of a not so good shot. The subject isn't directly in the middle and in the view of the audience. Although not all music videos have their performer in the center of the screen all the time. In this shot there is a lot of open space to the left. Since in photography we learn about the rule of 3rd's and I remember from previous lessons we also used it in media. I decided to apply it. The original shot is too distanced from the performer and as a person who views rap music videos often; I tried to imagine what I would expect from this genre of music on a screen.

Therefore I placed the tripod lower then Kace and made a low angle shot that he could rap into. The masked people stayed in the same position. However there was a sharp light in the back the would darken the entire shot, this caused a problem as it was hard to see Kace's face even with the head light on the camera. At this point I directed Jonathan(to the right) to not move his head and block the light.
This shot works a lot better because it feels more direct to the audience. They feel more involved and adds to the entertainment factor.

From this experience I learned if I want to know how to set up a nice shot I just have to imagine what the audience would expect, and use my previous knowledge of watching music videos. Then blend this in with some creativity. Also add elements of cinematography. For example the masked are placed just enough to be seen side by side of Kace's shoulders. This sticks with our element of Life and Death, Heaven and Hell theme. They are meant to represent Kace's 'demons' but also the Angle and Devil on each shoulder.

Production of Music Video: Filming Day 3

Production of Music Video: Filming Day 2

On our second day of filming we went at night to Ally Pally. It was pretty empty at the time so we decided we could benefit from this, but also the structure of the building and scenic views. - Created with Haiku Deck, presentation software that inspires

Behind the scene shoot/ L from Korrie Powell on Vimeo.

Here is a outtake from our music video. We filmed in Alexander Palace at night as we wanted to capture the whole of London, there are also sections of Alexander Palace that are interesting to film as seen in the video. Lighting played a huge feature on that day because we wanted to help get a nice look when we added the 'pleasantful' effect when in the post production stages. In order to do this we positioned Cristian in a spot where the lighting would capture his top half of his body while not extremely covering his face in light.
